Sam and Jacob are masters of their craft, this is one of my favorite scenes. It’s everything they don’t say in this scene. So much happens in an instant and I think this is why the camera is framed on their faces.
Loustat deliriously in love in that moment. Louis lost in Lestat, and they are smiling softly at each other until Claudia comes. Reality setting in, Louis sighing as he steps back and Lestat slightly follows his movement. In that millisecond, Lestat face changes entirely, frown in place as he and Louis make eye contact but he still maintains physical contact with Louis. Lingering knowing these are some of the final moments before they betray him, still wanting him. Pushing him away but still tethered to each other.
I remember rewinding this scene over and over. My favorite part is Lestat bringing g Louis into him as they dance. And it’s the same dance they have been doing since first creating Claudia too. You see it in the happy family montage in episode 4. I keep finding more and more details that we think aren’t important but then we look again and we find more. That is excellent story telling.
